This is a cassette tape inspired by a Catalonian brand of popping candy. Some of it is a contact mic in the mouth while the candy is popping. I made ‘ STRAWBERRY FLAVOUR (GO FUCK YOURSELF)’ on the Gurnicorn’ s Serge Synthesiser in Madrid, recording the vocals on the plane home. The sub bass bangers tying it all together were made on a JMT vs. GSR CVO-1 touch sensor. ‘ ACTION POPPING (WAH WAH WAH WAH)’ contains a drum-voice-synthesis solo with vocal elements from a theatre group who were screaming over the road from my Café Oto Project Space Residency. Trump was just voted in and I thought I could hear people protesting. Turns out they were just playing a game. The tape ends with a dedication to Jimi Hendrix. There’ s a poem on there too, spoken over one of my UH Fest jams made on Márton Bertók’ s system. The cassette comes with a free baggie of popping candy, and a note “LICK QUICKLY AND HEAR” and to ingest this substance the moment you press PLAY. As was custom at Blood Music gigs in 2016, I would hand out Fizz Wiz at different times of the set in part to give the listener a deeply personal, once-in-a-lifetime experience of sounds crackling and popping in the mouth, feeling like bones cracking, like youth, an a-rhythmic drum solo.
The accompanying video is made of broken images and letters and film footage that is inspired by the synthesis of sugar and carbon dioxide; a visual poem dedicated to the interaction between wet and dry, to the movement of blood platelets in a healthy system.
Written, recorded and produced by Simon Pomery.
London, Madrid, and some bits of aerospace between them both: BLOOD MUSIC Studio, Gurnicorn Studio, on a plane, Cafe Oto Project Space and Environs.
2016-2017A concept cassette about different kinds of candy.
